In architectural lighting, control systems define comfort, functionality, and efficiency. One of the most established standards is DALI, short for Digital Addressable Lighting Interface. But today, many luminaires use DALI-2. What’s the difference — and why does it matter?

What is DALI?

DALI is the original standard for digital lighting control. It enables dimming, on/off switching, and scene setting via a wired network. However, early DALI devices didn’t always communicate reliably across brands.

Improved: DALI 2.

DALI-2 improves that. It introduces certified compatibility between luminaires, sensors, switches, and control devices — regardless of manufacturer. It also adds two-way communication, allowing luminaires to send feedback such as energy use or error reports to the control system. This simplifies monitoring and maintenance.

For smaller or flexible projects, phase-cut dimming or Casambi wireless control can be used as alternative control methods.
