EXPERT GUIDE | What’s behind the CE marking on a luminaire.
When you see the CE mark on our luminaires, it means it can be sold safely across Europe. This small symbol shows that the manufacturer follows the main European rules for electrical safety, electromagnetic control, and material use.
It doesn’t rate quality — but it proves that the luminaire meets the legal requirements for safe design and production.
- Electrical safety.
Every luminaire in Europe must be safe to use and install. The Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU) checks this. It covers things like insulation, wiring, heat protection, and the safety of the light source. Tests are based on European standards such as EN 60598-1, EN 61347, and EN 62471. - Electromagnetic safety.
The Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive (2014/30/EU) makes sure that lights do not disturb other electronic systems — and are not disturbed by them.
Tests like EN 55015 and EN 61547 confirm that the luminaire can work safely in spaces with computers, sensors, or audio systems. - Safe materials.
The RoHS Directive (2011/65/EU) limits the use of harmful materials such as lead or mercury. This protects both people and the environment. It’s part of Europe’s long-term goal to make lighting more sustainable. - CE Declaration of Conformity.
Each manufacturer must prepare a Declaration of Conformity. This document lists all the rules and standards that the luminaire meets. There is no official “CE certificate” for normal lighting products. The manufacturer takes responsibility for testing and keeping records.
Why the CE mark matters.
The CE mark gives designers, distributors, and installers peace of mind. It shows that a luminaire is safe, responsible, and ready for the European market.
