One of the most beautiful aspects of lighting is that it can bring places back to life. A wonderful example is Fort de Gagel in Utrecht. This old fort was constructed in 1819 as part of the New Dutch Waterline. Once intended to keep enemies out, it has now been transformed into a hospitable location where life is celebrated to the fullest.
Ammunition rooms become meeting rooms.
The extensive fortress, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, has many different areas. For example, the former hospital and pharmacy have been transformed into a welcome hall and the meeting rooms are located on the site of the former gunpowder and ammunition rooms. There is also an amazing restaurant. The similarities between all these spaces? The lack of windows. That’s only logical, given the original function of the fort, but it’s quite dark if you want to make it a hospitable environment. The solution? Excellent lighting!
No daylight.
Our partner bedrijfsverlichting.nl supplied the lighting: “We were asked to create an equally cosy and warm atmosphere in all the different areas. In a large part of the fort there are only a few windows. As a result, a lot of lighting is required for those places. Especially in the corridors of the fort, the meeting rooms and part of the restaurant. The lighting had to be multifunctional: when the restaurant is open, there must be atmospheric lighting, but other events can take place during the day, which in turn require different lighting.”
Elegant lighting in a rough environment.
The Nordic Aluminum 3-phase voltage rail has been used as infrastructure. Two types of 3-phase rail spots from Karizma Luce have been placed in the rail: the Stretto and Vuoto. These are rail spots with luxurious looks, which creates a beautiful contrast with the rough environment. They are also multifunctional. All lighting is controlled with Casambi’s user-friendly smart lighting system, which can be controlled via Bluetooth. Depending on the time of day, different scenes can be set. This brings the many areas of the fort back to life again.”
